This instrument, however, doesn’t rely exclusively on sampled movement. This is just the compromise you make when using sampled slides: authenticity at the expense of versatility. A slide takes the same amount of time at 60 BPM as at 200 BPM. Sometimes, the slide sample is longer than the note you’ve programmed and may therefore be unusable.īecause the slides are sampled and not scripted, they also cannot adjust for tempo. That can be an issue if you want a really long slide or a really short one. But to be fair, there is an unavoidable limitation inherent in sampled slides: the duration of the slide isn’t user-definable. So when you choose an up-a-fifth slide, it begins a fifth below the target note.Īll this sounds pretty cool. Note that slides always end on the note you’ve programmed, as opposed to, say a “dive bomb” effect that starts on the programmed note and falls away from there. These work because somebody actually played those slides for you. Here are just a few of the slides this instrument can do: up a fourth, down a fifth, up a major sixth, and the one you’ll never believably fake with scripting, a full-octave slide. Note that Delta Blues also has some sampled slides, but not to the extent of STEEL. However, the only way to get truly natural-sounding slides is to actually sample the whole slide from beginning to end. You can fake a slide using pitch bends, but it’s difficult to do while playing and doesn’t sound authentic if the interval is more than a few semitones. This one combines the unique, gritty tone and sustain of an electric lap steel with authentic-sounding slides. Which brings us to today’s instrument, the STEEL Electric Lap Steel Guitar. There is no single library that even covers all types of guitars, much less all the ways guitars can sound or be played. There is no way they can support every articulation that such an expressive instrument is capable of. The problem with guitar libraries is that they are always going to be limited compared to a real guitar played by a real guitarist. But raise your hand if you’re a keyboardist with poor guitar skills (you can’t see my hand, but it’s up) and you don’t know any pickers who are willing to come over at 2:00 AM, work for free, bow to your creative vision and not drink all your beer.
The obvious question you may be asking is: OK, but how many guitar libraries does a person really need? Well, if you’re a skilled guitarist, the answer might well be “none”. And now Tracy has expanded the collection once again with a new one, an electric lap steel guitar.
But it was a guitar library that got him started in this business even before Indiginus existed, and it was a guitar library that put his company on the map. Granted, he doesn’t just do guitars (his synthetic orchestra Solid State Symphony is a personal favorite, and Blue Street Brass is one-of-a-kind). It would seem that proprietor, chief recordist, Kontakt scripter extraordinaire and “Chief Indigineer” Tracy Collins has gotten the process down.
